Elden Ring, while a mite more approachable than the rest of the Soulsborne collection, is still very challenging and an formidable game to master thanks to the fact that every living thing in the Lands Between wants your guts for garters. So, it seems that players are making the most of the messages aspect of the game and winding each other up instead of offering guidance, and I've got to admit, it is funny.
To the uninitiated, there are a number of illusory walls in Elden Ring that obscure other areas or special loot, and all the player has to do to discover them is bash their sword or stabby implement of choice into the "wall." Because I'm a generous sort, I'll let you know that there's one in the Academy of Raya Lucaria which will give you the Comet Sorcery spell and there's another in the Sainted Hero's Grave that hides a handy shortcut. However, it looks like the majority of players are leaving messages behind about illusory walls where there are none, meaning that others are clattering into walls like a lemon.

Really, there's nothing to lose if you're battering a wall that's a wall and not a gate to some super sweet treasure. This logic doesn't make it any less annoying, and given how hard this game is, you could sympathise with the swift disappointment that arrives once you realise someone's pulling your leg about a boon or a shortcut past some dreadful enemies.
I stopped doing this until I found that there *are* hidden walls in the game and am now back on it

There's a special place in hell for people who drop messages in Elden Ring that say "secret ahead" next to walls that absolutely have no secrets behind them.

Every time I find an actual illusory wall in Elden Ring I walk back a couple meters and add a "Liar ahead" message

I just found an illusory wall in Elden Ring, but the message in front of it saying “hidden path” only had 1 upvote

30 seconds later I found a troll “hidden path” message with 50 upvotes

Sam Greer is convinced that Elden Ring is a comedy - notwithstanding the tomfoolery that players are inflicting upon each other. "It twists the knife one minute, and a dummy knife the next. It’s a game all about delivering the unexpected," she explains in her commentary on the game here. "Sometimes, that's through a magic portal to face a horrible monstrosity at the ends of the world; at others, it's having to fight a sentient boulder. You'll never know what's around the corner and that's a huge part of what draws players to these games."
