'Elden Ring' Predicted To Outsell 'Modern Warfare 2' This Year

Activision’s latest in the Call of Duty franchise, Modern Warfare II is making its way onto PC and consoles on 28 October, and fans are predictably super hyped for it. As well as the super realistic visuals we’ve all come to expect from CoD at this point, it’s also been rumoured that the game could be getting a map editor, for the first time in the series’ history. 

With that in mind (and also, simply the fact that it’s a new Call of Duty game), you’d think it’d quite easily be able to send itself to the top of 2022’s best-selling games list, but a new challenger has entered the ring. You’ve read the headline - it’s none other than FromSoftware’s open-world behemoth, Elden Ring.

A new report from industry analyst Mat Piscatella (via NPD) has predicted that Elden Ring will end up being 2022’s best-selling premium game in the US, topping the likes of God of War: Ragnarök, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and yes, Modern Warfare II. If this comes to fruition, it’ll be a pretty massive deal - it’d be just the third time since 2009 that Call of Duty isn’t at the top of the list. With that said, though, it’s also predicted that Call of Duty will remain the US’ overall best-selling premium game franchise (for a record-breaking 14th year).

Although this would be a fantastic achievement for FromSoftware, it’s not exactly news that Elden Ring has been selling super well. It was previously confirmed that by the end of March, it’d sold a colossal 13.4 million copies - over three times more than what was expected (Bandai Namco predicted that it’d sell four million copies).

For reference, that was already more than Dark Souls 3’s sales as of May 2020 (which was FromSoftware’s previous best-seller, at 10 million units), and also almost half the combined sales of the Dark Souls franchise in all its entirety. Yes, including Demon’s Souls. There’s no doubt that those sales figures will be even bigger now, too - we’ll just have to sit tight and see if they end up being big enough to take down CoD.
