Elon Musk just changed Twitter's name, completely out of the blue

This certainly isn’t what any of us expected. Elon Musk has announced, alongside Twitter’s new CEO Linda Yaccarino, that the social media site will soon rebrand and go by the title X.

What a downhill slide it’s been for Twitter as of late. As I’m sure you’re now aware, Tesla founder Elon Musk took over Twitter last year following an eye-watering $41 billion deal. Musk did actually attempt to back out of the deal, but it was eventually forced through. Since then, we’ve seen a number of questionable new features implemented and changes made. The verification system was torn away, and replaced with subscription service Twitter Blue. Temporarily, we had the 600 tweets a day cap - and in the past couple of days, we’ve been hearing about a limit on sending DMs. At this stage, Musk fails to surprise me with his silly antics but I’ll admit, I didn’t see this latest change coming.

Chief executive Linda Yaccarino took to Twitter to announce the name change, with Musk updating his profile picture and bio. Twitter will no longer simply be a social media app. X will transform it into a ‘super app’, whatever that means. Musk wrote, “And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.”

Yaccarino added, “It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression. Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square. X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.”

She continued, “For years, fans and critics alike have pushed Twitter to dream bigger, to innovate faster, and to fulfill our great potential. X will do that and more. We’ve already started to see X take shape over the past [eight] months through our rapid feature launches, but we’re just getting started. There’s absolutely no limit to this transformation. X will be the platform that can deliver, well….everything. [Elon Musk] and I are looking forward to working with our teams and every single one of our partners to bring X to the world.”

Watch out Zuckerberg. I’m imagining those Threads numbers are only going to grow.
