Facebook Has Announced Its New Name, And The Memes Are On Fire

Facebook is dead. Long live Meta. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the tech giant’s name change last night as part of an ambitious rebrand that will see the company shift from being a social media platform to bold new realms - including virtual reality.

To be clear, this name change only applies to Facebook as a wider parent company. Facebook as a social media platform will keep its name, as will Instagram and Whatsapp. Even so, it’s a pretty major change for one of the largest and most influential companies on the planet.

Predictably, the name change has already inspired a wave of truly killer memes. Memes which you can see for yourself below.

The incredibly odd online presentation hosted by Zuckerberg also made it clear that the new “Meta” name is intended to reflect the CEO’s dreams of building a Ready Player One-style metaverse.

The company is already looking to hire up to 10,000 staff in Europe to make this happen. Zuckerberg also previously told The Verge he believes one day people will see Facebook as a "metaverse company", as opposed to a social media company.

The metaverse is a place "where instead of just viewing content - you are in it," he explained. "And you feel present with other people as if you were in other places, having different experiences that you couldn't necessarily do on a 2D app or webpage, like dancing, for example, or different types of fitness."

The Facebook creator unveiled an early look at what he believes is the first step towards the multiverse a few months ago. It was essentially a VR chatroom, but last night’s more detailed look gave us more of an idea of what he’s going for: a slightly shinier VR chatroom.

Leaving the metaverse aside, there are more practical reasons behind dropping Facebook and becoming Meta. Between the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the recent whistleblower report, the Facebook name doesn’t exactly conjure up images of a force for good.
