Fallout: one of the best games in the series is completely free to play

It’s been a good long while since we were treated to a new Fallout game. That’s not a major surprise. After all, Bethesda has been busy beavering away on Starfield. I’m imagining that alongside the continued support for that game, the focus will now turn to The Elder Scrolls VI.

With that in mind, the next Fallout instalment is likely to be many, many years away. Amazon’s TV adaptation is in the midst of filming though. This week, one fan was able to grab a video of the cast in action - and the set design looks very promising. It’s being written by Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan (Yes, Christopher Nolan’s brother) which bodes very well for the series, plus Todd Howard himself is serving as an executive producer. In the meantime though, us Fallout fans will have to return to replaying our old favourites - and I’m here to argue that Fallout Shelter is an underrated free-to-play gem that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Released back in 2015, Fallout Shelter is perhaps overlooked by many Fallout fans. Sure, it’s not as sprawling and snazzy as major Fallout releases, but that doesn’t make it any less fun. It’s essentially a construction and management sim originally released to mobile devices, before receiving ports to PC, Xbox, Switch, and PlayStation. You can also play the game on Tesla vehicles, as a random fun fact.

I wandered over to Reddit to see if I was alone in continuing to be a fan of Fallout Shelter but I’m thrilled to see I’m not. Reddit user Direct-Translator905 wrote, “Fallout Shelter humour is still good. Sent one of my Mr. Handys to the wasteland to make money. Minutes into the quest he said, ‘If I were just to hover off into the sunset, would the Vault even care?’” A touch of the sillies is always welcomed.

HungrPhoenix said, “I have good memories with that game. It was the first game I ever installed a cheating application for, and it was just fun to mess around with. I had everyone in my Vault kitted out in Power Armor, as many Mister Handy's as possible, and lots of pets.” I agree with many that you can only play Fallout Shelter for so many hours before you crave something a bit more substantial but as a free-to-play release, it’s worth checking out.
