So, we’ve made it to Christmas Eve. How are we all feeling? Got the festivity coursing through your veins? If not, what better way to get into the spirit than a free psychological horror game? Consuming horror content the night before Christmas isn’t the usual reason that people would be sleepless tonight, but y’know. Let’s just say that’s how it ties in to the occasion.
Anyone can grab I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream for free from Good Old Games until 25 December, so be sure to act fast if you want it. All you’ll need to do is sign up for GOG’s email list, which is a small price to pay for nightmares over the festive season.
If you were looking for something a little less horrifying to play over the Christmas holidays, check out these recommendations for some festive fun.
In case you were unfamiliar, the post-apocalyptic title is a point-and-click adventure game, developed by Cyberdreams and The Dreamers Guild back in 1995. It’s based on the short story by Harlan Ellison with the same title, which is set in a world destroyed by nuclear war, in which the last surviving people are imprisoned and tortured by a psychotic artificial intelligence. Fun for all the family!

The game, at least, does give you some amount of hope - it has multiple endings, and players do have a chance to escape and rebuild humanity. As you’d expect though, it’s still pretty dark, so it’s not what most would consider to be fit for the festive season. Of course, you can always grab it while it’s free and then save it for later, but that’s how massive backlogs are formed, which are arguably the scariest thing of all.
The main story is around six hours long, so if you’re not having a mad rush today to finish off your Christmas preparations (in which case, I envy you), it could be the perfect way to pass the time until the big day. If your definition of perfect is terrifying, that is. To each their own.
