So close.

After a rocky few years, Capcom has been absolutely nailing it recently. Games like Monster Hunter World, Resident Evil 2, and Devil May Cry V have shown that the company has really hit a new stride, finding its strength by embracing its past and focusing on what we all love about its games.

Even this year's Resident Evil 3, while by no means a perfect game, is widely considered to be a strong remake and a promising sign that Capcom intends to get more out of its back catalogue of classic games. This approach, naturally, often leads fans to ask about the long-forgotten Dino Crisis franchise.

The dinosaur-flavoured survival horror disappeared way back in 2003, but it's developed a real cult following that have become singularly obsessed with the idea of a remake or reboot. Indeed, a lot of gamers were particularly unhappy with the rumour that Resident Evil 4 is up for a remake next because they see it as taking resources away from Dino Crisis.

As it turns out, Capcom had at one point considered reviving Dino Crisis. In an excellent new episode of DidYouKnowGaming? from reporter and researcher Liam Robertson, one of Capcom's more troubled studios let to the ultimate demise of the Dino Crisis reboot.

In the video, which you can watch below, it's revealed that Capcom Vancouver pitched the Dino Crisis reboot around 2015. For those that don't know, Vancouver were also responsible for the Dead Rising games, which saw a steady decline in quality over the years before the studio was eventually shuttered in 2018.

There were, apparently, troubles at the studio since Dead Rising 2. This led to problems with the third and fourth games in the series. In the midst of this, the Dino Crisis pitch was shot down by Capcom Japan before it ever really got off the ground. Robertson explains that the company was unwilling to invest in the new technology that the project would have required.

Disappointing? I guess. Mind you, this was years ago and long before Capcom realised that remakes = profit. Just because a Dino Crisis reboot was shot down in 2015 doesn't mean one would be now. After all, the RE Engine was used for both Resident Evil remakes and Devil May Cry V, so who's to say it couldn't be implemented to make a new Dino Crisis? Numerous fan mods have certainly proved it could work.

There's also the fact that Capcom Vancouver might not have been the best team to make such a game. Given the alleged issues at the studio throughout Dead Rising development, there's every chance the Dino Crisis reboot could have been a mess that made sure we never saw the franchise again. Hopefully it'll come back soon, and come back right. We've just gotta keep the hope alive.
