Netflix has confirmed that it's developing a live-action Assassin's Creed TV series in collaboration with Ubisoft. Deadline reports that this is part of a new deal between the two companies in which the streaming giant will adapt a number of live-action and animated shows based on the popular video game franchise.
Not much is known about the upcoming Assassin's Creed series right now, apart from the fact that it's being executive produced by Ubisoft Film & Television's Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik. It's currently on the hunt for a showrunner, which it implies that it's very early days for the project.
"We're excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin's Creed is beloved for," said Peter Friedlander, VP, Original Series, Netflix. "From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy."
"For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin's Creed brand into an iconic franchise," added Jason Altman, Head of Ubisoft Film & Television - Los Angeles. "We're thrilled to create an Assassin's Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin's Creed universe."
Assassin's Creed has remained one of the most popular AAA franchises since its inception in 2007. The most recent instalment, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, is set to arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and PC on November 10th.
Here's hoping that the new series, whichever game or period in history it chooses to adapt, ends up a little better than the live-action movie from 2017. Despite having some serious talent behind it, the project was something of a critical and commercial dud. Hopefully a TV series gives the franchise more space to tell a better story.
