A Need For Speed Remaster Is Reportedly In Development At EA

The pursuit of happiness.

EA is reportedly working on remaster of one of the games in the Need For Speed series. Unfortunately, it's probably not the one you're hoping it is.

A new report from VentureBeat references "a source familiar with the publisher's release slate", and has revealed what look to be EA's plans through the rest of the year. The focus of the report is on the games that EA has promised to bring to Switch (include Apex Legends), but it looks like a remaster of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit is also on the cards.

To be clear, it sounds like this remaster will be of the 2010 version of Hot Pursuit, which is not to be confused with Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit or Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. No, I have no idea why EA would make things this confusing either. The game will be coming to Switch, as well as PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit was a pretty big hit with critics when it launched, and received a ton of praise for capturing the feel of the older Need For Speed games. Although it didn't go down quite as well with the fans, it's one of the more popular entries. Having said that, I'm willing to bet the majority would much rather have seen EA remaster Need For Speed: Underground 2.

It's likely that the Hot Pursuit remaster will be in the same vein as the recently released Burnout Paradise remaster from EA, which is actually really rather excellent. Our very own Mike Diver has been really enjoying playing through the 2008 racer on Switch over the last few days, and you can check out his full thoughts on the remaster right here.

Hopefully the Hot Pursuit remaster goes on to become a success and leads to further Need For Speed remasters. Because again, we all know what the people really want to see from a Need For Speed remaster, don't we? Let's hope this news brings us one step closer.

The report also claims that the other games coming to Switch are Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and a new EA Originals game from Velan Studios. I'd be happy with both of those, especially since Velan was formed by developers whose previous experience includes Metroid Prime. I am, however, still a little bummed that there's no sign at all of The Sims on Switch. I don't care which one EA ports to Nintendo's console, it just needs to happen.
