A New Pokémon Series Is Headed To Netflix This Summer

Gotta watch 'em all.

Pokémon fans around the world will be thrilled to learn a brand-new run of adventures will be making their debut as Netflix Original in June. Pokémon Journeys: The Series is the continuation/soft reboot of the popular animated series that started airing in Japan earlier this year, and will now be available to everyone via the streaming giant.

If you're unfamiliar with the latest series (understandable if you don't live in Japan), Pokémon Journeys once again follows Ash Ketchum and his faithful companion Pikachu as they explore the world, catch monsters, and generally train to be the best they can be. Of course, since Ash recently won the title of Pokémon champion after 22 years, he has less to prove these days. That's where Goh comes in.

Much like Ash, Goh is a young kid with a Pokémon sidekick and an impossible goal: to catch one of every Pokémon. Now, that might have been a realistic dream back in my day when there only 151 of the blighters, but there are currently over 800. Good luck Goh, that's all I'm saying.

I don't want to spoil anything for those fans who haven't been following the show's release in Japan, but this latest series seems to have gone down pretty well so far. Most notably for the act that Ash seems to be assembling one hell of a team... but again, no spoilers from me as to which Pokémon he's teamed up with. You'll just have to watch for yourself.

You can check out the first trailer for Pokémon Journeys below, which also gives us a glimpse of the new theme song from Canadian pop band Walk off the Earth. No, I haven't heard of them before either. It's not a bad son though!

While the anime usually follows the events of whichever game came out the most recently, only part of Pokémon Journeys takes place in the Galar region from Sword/Shield. Longtime fans will be glad to know that regions and monsters from all generations show up in this globe-trotting series, including the classics like Kanto and Johto.

The first 12 episodes of Pokémon Journeys are set to debut on Netflix on June 12th, 2020. After that, you can expect a following 12 episodes every three months for the rest of the season. Whether you binge every couple of months or space it out so that you have a new episode to watch every week is up to you, but in this weird quarantine-focused time we're living in, I'd savour every new piece of entertainment I can get.
