A brand new short series of animated Pokémon adventures is coming in the new year. Set to debut in January, Pokemon: Twilight Wings will focus on the lives of the residents of the Galar region, the UK-inspired land introduced in this year's Pokemon Sword & Shield.

Announced over on the official Pokémon website, Twilight Wings will be made up of seven episodes dedicated to exploring the new region "where Pokémon battles have developed into a cultural sensation." It's completely separate from the ongoing animated series, which recently underwent a slight reboot of its own.

Each episode is expected to be around five minutes long, and will premiere on the Pokémon YouTube channel. The first episode will arrive on January 15th, with the following six to drop sometime after that.

"Pokémon fans who have been exploring the Galar region will soon be able to experience it in a vibrant new way with the release of Pokémon: Twilight Wings, a seven-episode limited animated series," a post on the Pokémon website reads.

"Pokémon: Twilight Wings will show in detail the dreams of Galar's residents, the realities they face, the challenges they must overcome, and the conflicts they must resolve. In addition to these new stories, fans can expect to see a variety of Pokémon originally discovered in the Galar region appearing throughout the capsule series."

"Animation will be provided by Studio Colorido, which is known for its warm and welcoming visual designs and dynamic photographic techniques, as seen in the anime film Penguin Highway."

While my own review of Pokemon Sword & Shield was less than glowing, I did find a lot to love about the game's Galar region. As a UK resident, it was fascinating to see a Japanese Studio's take on the country, with Pokémon and locations that are clearly inspired by various aspects of life and culture on our rainy little island.

Beyond that, however, I argued that "Pokémon Sword & Shield aren't bad games - not even close. But they fall far short of what they might have been: the biggest and best Pokémon games in years, and the evolution the series needed."

Regardless, I'm quite happy to check out a short series of further adventures in the Galar region. If for no other reason than the fact that Penguin Highway is an absolutely gorgeous-looking piece of work, and I can't wait to see what Studio Colorido can do with the wonderful world of Pokémon.
