A ‘Pokémon GO’-Like ‘Stranger Things’ Game Is Coming Out In 2020

We already knew that season three of Stranger Things will be accompanied by a neat, 16-bit-looking game for consoles and PC - but we now know there's yet another video game in the works, based on the smash-hit supernatural Netflix show.

Simply called Stranger Things, this second project is a mobile title, targeting both Android and iOS, with Pokémon GO-like augmented-reality gameplay. It's being made by Finland's Next Games, and will use Google Maps to allow players to explore the Upside Down beneath their own neighbourhoods, through your phone screen.

Next Games has experience with this kind of AR-ish TV-tie-in title - the studio produced The Walking Dead: Our World, which brought a virtual zombie apocalypse to the palm of your hand.

The new game's art style, as shown in the images on this page, is very striking - but not all that spooky. It's adopting what Next Games consider to be a 1980s Saturday morning cartoon look, and having watched his way through enough of those in the '80s, this writer can only say: yep, looks pretty nailed to me.

Says Next Games' CEO, Teemu Huuhtanen, of the project:

We are huge fans of Stranger Things, and thrilled to work together with Netflix to bring our shared vision of Stranger Things into life in a mobile game format.

Our core focus will be to deliver on Stranger Things' rich and intense themes like friendship and supernatural adventure, and translate these into snack-sized entertainment on your mobile device.

Combined with Netflix's second-to none ability to reach audiences across the globe, we will deploy all of our accumulated creative and technological expertise to create a game for the fans of the series all around the world.

Stranger Things, the mobile game, is set for a 2020 release. The isometric retro-styled one comes out on July 4, coinciding with the launch on Netflix of season three of the show.

Will you be playing either of these Stranger Things games? Let us know - we're on Twitter and Facebook, and we're now live on Snapchat Discover, too.
