Despite managing to get off on the wrong foot with every single person in the world, thanks to a freakish first trailer and a CGI nightmare creature, Sonic The Hedgehog ultimately went to win over cinema audiences everywhere. How? Winning back trust by redesigning the titular character was a factor, sure... but ultimately it was just a good movie.

I'm not saying Sonic The Hedgehog is perfect (it isn't), but it's far, far better than a live-action adaptation of the SEGA mascot had any right to be. A wonderful voice performance from Ben Schwartz as Sonic was the cherry on a sundae made up of dumb fun, exciting action, and Jim Carrey cranking out a vintage Jim Carrey performance.

Now, the news we'd all been waiting for has finally arrived. Sonic The Hedgehog will officially be getting a sequel. This probably won't come as much of a surprise. After all, the movie enjoyed the most successful box office opening of any big-screen video game adaptation to date. Still, it's nice to know for certain that the blue blur is set to return for at least one more adventure, right?

Paramount and SEGA confirmed the news to Variety last night, revealing that the first film's director Jeff Fowler would be returning along with screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller. It's early days for the project so there's no news on casting yet, though we can probably expect Ben Schwartz, James Marsden and Jim Carrey to come back. Schwartz retweeted the news, so he's almost definitely up for a second round.

In fact, Carrey has already expressed an interest in returning as the villainous Doctor Robotnik. At the end of the last film, we left him stranded on some weird mushroom planet, where he'd gone full-on classic villain. One assumes he'll find a way to return to Earth, where he and Sonic can get back to duking it out.

"I wouldn't mind going to do another one," Carrey explained during an interview ahead of the movie's release. "Because it was so much fun, first of all, and a real challenge to try to convince people that I have a triple-digit IQ... There is so much room, you know, Robotnik has not reached his apotheosis."

Of course, Sonic The Hedgehog also teased the arrival of another classic character. While he didn't get very much screen time at all, Tails the fox showed his adorable little face in a post-credits scene. Naturally, we'd assume Sonic, Tails, and maybe even a few other familiar faces from the games will play a key role in the sequel. Let's wait and see.
