'Assassin's Creed Valhalla' Fans Accuse Ubisoft Of Putting Microtransactions Over Bug Fixes

That wasn't very Viking-y of you.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla, much like the vast majority of open-world games these days, launched with a fair number of bugs and glitches. While the game's release didn't bring with it anything quite on the level of Cyberpunk 2077 or Assassin's Creed Unity, there were more than a few irritating wrinkles that needed to be ironed out.

On PlayStation 5, especially, I encountered a handful of quests that would simply stop working at a certain point. In some cases an NPC wouldn't move to the spot they needed to for the next cutscene to trigger. Other times, waypoints would completely to fail to load at all. In every instance I'd have to reload an earlier save and attempt to play again. Annoying? Yes, but I'm actually one of the lucky ones: Assassin's Creed Valhalla launched with some horrendous bugs that could break the entire game for some players.

It's important to note that Ubisoft has fixed a lot of Valhalla's more pressing issues, but it is still a fairly buggy game, even three months on from launch. Some gamers are still complaining of a handful of game-breaking issues, too, and it's the presence of these bugs that is starting to rankle the community more and more as Ubisoft seemingly switches its focus to post-game content.

Over on Reddit and the official Ubisoft forums, fans are beginning to accuse the publisher of putting microtransactions ahead of fixing the game's ongoing bugs. Some have argued that the in-game store is updated more regularly than the game itself, and while it's obviously easier to introduce new items to a store than it is to roll out fixes for game-breaking bugs, you can see where the frustration is coming from.

"I keep trying to come back to the game but every single time there's a new issue," wrote one user. "First my save and fast travel systems gets broken for a month, then I can fast travel but not save, now my cutscenes are broken and characters mouths won't move. I want to love this game but every time I play it something else goes wrong."

"Exactly," responded another. "Shows Ubisoft priorities. They rather launch a f*cking Lord Of The Rings armour that some whales will buy than fixing the main experience. If they game was perfectly polished I wouldn't mind, but game is still broken."

Ubisoft's first major expansion for Assassin's Creed Valhalla is called Wrath of the Druids and is scheduled to release in the spring. Hopefully this major update comes with a ton of improvements... but given that the spring is still a few months away, you can understand why the fans want to see Ubisoft make more substantial changes to the base game a lot sooner.
