Activision Blizzard might have cut its teeth on console and PC-based franchises like Call of Duty and Diablo, but it seems that mobile gaming is now the publisher's most lucrative area. As part of a recent earnings call, the company announced that mobile revenue for the last quarter exceeded console and PC, as well as all other areas of the business.

For the quarter ending December 31st, 2019, Activision Blizzard pulled in an eye-watering $633 million from mobile and ancillary revenue. That's around 32% of the company's total net revenue. Meanwhile, console revenue was $595 million, and PC revenue $521 million.

This represents a significant shift from the last three months of 2018, when console accounted for 34% of Activision's business, followed by PC with 31% and mobile at 25%.

No doubt a huge part of Activision's success in the mobile space comes down to Call of Duty Mobile. Within a week of releasing, the on-the-go FPS smashed records to claim the biggest mobile launch to date, with over 100 million downloads in just seven days. On iOS alone, Call Of Duty Mobile was downloaded an eye-watering 56.9 million times. A huge number compared to rival games like PUBG Mobile and Fortnite, which managed 28 million and 22.5 million respectively in their own launch weeks.

It's no surprise that Activision has its sight set on further mobile action, then. Late last year, the publisher announced that it was looking into adapting many more of its old IPs for mobile - a pledge it reiterated in its most recent earnings call.

"A third of our business is on mobile already," Activision COO Coddy Johnson told investors. "We have the largest mobile gaming presence in the west. So we want to build on that leadership position. We think it's a foundation of strength to do that. [Mobile] is a massive opportunity, and we think not just for Call of Duty and not just for Diablo Immortal."

If a recent leak is to be believed, Activision's next big mobile game is to be an endless runner starring Crash Bandicoot. A newly-unearthed Facebook ad seems to suggest that the popular gaming mascot will be featuring in a new game developed by King, the studio behind Activision-owned mega-hit Candy Crush.

I'm no businessman, but even I know that mobile + Crash Bandicoot + Candy Crush = lots and lots of money. I've no doubt that Activision's mobile revenue will only increase as it continues to release mobile versions of its well-known IPs.
