It's been 22 years since Age Of Empires 2 first consumed every waking second of my life, and yet Microsoft is still not content with me moving on and attempting to play anything else. First there was Age Of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, a stunning remaster that released just last year. Now, it seems that there are multiple expansions on the way, with the first one dropping as soon as next month. Have mercy.
Announced earlier this week, Microsoft is dropping the massive Lords Of The West expansion on January 26th, 2021. It brings with it new civilisations, new campaign missions, and all-new achievements to earn. Basically, there's a lot of new stuff coming to the game, and you can read all about over on the official Age of Empires website.
If you can't be doing with that, however, allow me to provide you with the highlights, starting with the new civilisations. Age Of Empires 2 will be introducing Burgundians and Sicilians, both of which come with their own unique units and technologies, plus new architecture to fawn over.
"Rise from a mere duchy to the marvel of Western Europe through economic might, cultural achievement, and the use of advanced military technology and tactics," the Age Of Empires website says of the Burgundians. "The Burgundian unique unit is the Coustillier, a cavalry unit that utilizes a powerful shock attack when charging into battle!"
Meanwhile, the Sicilians invite you to "experience the diverse cultures and martial spirit of the Mediterranean's crossroads as you build one of the most coveted kingdoms in medieval Europe. The Sicilian unique unit is the Serjeant, a hardy infantry unit that can construct the formidable Donjon."
As if that wasn't enough for all you Jacks and Jills, three brand-new and fully voiced campaigns will be included in the expansion. Edward Longshanks, The Grand Dukes of the West, and The Hautevilles will offer three entirely different new stories to experience. You might even learn a thing or two about a thing or two, as Microsoft has every intention of keeping the quality of these new campaigns in line with previous content.
While Microsoft has yet to outright confirm that there will be more expansions of Lords Of The West, the company did describe this upcoming content as the first, implying very heavily that there's more to come. I'm never going to be done with Age Of Empires 2, am I?
