Lars Mikkelsen has been cast as Grand Admiral Thrawn in the anticipated Ahsoka spin off show, claims a new report, connecting The Mandalorian and Star Wars Rebels together in a new way.
A formidable and unremitting member of the Chiss species, Thrawn was an exceptional officer within the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet. In the Clone Wars, he encountered Anakin Skywalker and cooperated with him to find Padme Amidala before her assassins completed their assignment. Though their destinies diverged, Thrawn eventually offered his allegiance to Emperor Palpatine, understanding that an alliance with the new regime would be beneficial to the Chiss. Timothy Zahn, the creator of the character, explained that figures like Erwin Rommel, Robert E. Lee, Hannibal Barca, Alexander the Great, and Sherlock Holmes all inspired the development of this terrifying Imperial officer.
Now, I don't know a lot about Thrawn, other than the things I've just looked up about the character. What I do know is that those people I follow on Twitter who are into Star Wars are all aflutter when he's mentioned. And, there are lots of screenshots from Star Wars Rebels with captions like, "ugh omg," "that man is scrum-diddly-umptious," and a sequence of emojis which cannot be repeated here. I also know that the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano is looking for him; in her confrontation with Morgan Elsbeth towards the end of the second season of The Mandalorian, she demands that his location is given, but her attacker refuses to reveal it.
The report from Small Screen alleges that "sources close to Lucasfilm" have confirmed that Thrawn will appear in the Ahsoka spin off, and that he will be played by actor Lars Mikkelsen. He has numerous credits in Danish movies, TV shows, and animated series, as well as appearing in The Witcher, Sherlock and House of Cards. In addition, he voiced Thrawn in Star Wars Rebels, and his perfect British accent is the result of listening to a lot of Monty Python sketches when he was a child. (And, he's the older brother of Mads Mikkelsen. I added that because I knew you were wondering. You're welcome.)
As Thrawn's and Ezra Bridger's paths are interlinked, and the plot of the Ahsoka show will attempt to tie the loose ends of the two characters' disappearances, there are rumours that other familiar faces will return, like Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla and Zeb Orrelios. At the moment, this hasn't been confirmed or denied by Disney, so we should take this news with a pinch of salt. It would be an excellent casting choice to bring Mikkelsen into the live-action series, though. We'll keep you in the loop as and when we learn more.
