Who among us Star Wars fans doesn't remember the multitude of emotions we felt when Emperor Palpatine uttered the eponymous line "execute Order 66", beginning the near extinction of the Jedi Order in the blink of an eye. Truly, it was the blurst of times.
In Star Wars canon, the time period between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope is ripe with storytelling opportunities. It makes sense then, that Respawn Entertainment and EA would choose to set the upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order game in that relatively untapped little nugget of time. A Jedi on the run from the Empire hellbent on taking him out, sounds like a rollicking time for the whole family to me, and I cannot wait to get my teeth into what will hopefully be one of the great Star Wars stories.
We spoke to Game Director Stig Asmussen at a recent event for the game in LA though, where he revealed that the team explored a number of different time periods before settling on this one:
"Arriving at the time period wasn't something that was just like a lightbulb moment that went off in somebody's head like 'this is where we're going to go'. We stress-tested multiple different time periods but to be honest, for the type of game we're making, it's about a Jedi on the run, being hunted. There's a certain amount of pressure and stakes that we wanted for the player, and turns out this is perfect for that."
Very intriguing, I'm sure you'll agree. We pressed Asmussen to dish a little more on some of the ideas that were left on the cutting room floor, but the little minx was keeping shtum about what else they considered. Speaking as an optimistic Star Wars fan, I sincerely hope some of those ideas come to fruition at some point in the future.
Ideally, I'd like a story about Wedge Antilles assembling a crack team of pilots to wreak havoc on the Empire with a series of dangerous covert missions set somewhere between A New Hope and Return Of The Jedi. Basically Rogue Squadron. I want more Rogue Squadron.
Anywho, that isn't all we managed to prise from the interview. As many gaming fans will know, Respawn Entertainment make a couple of small indie titles called Titanfall and Apex Legends. The latter of which, is an FPS battle royale game. I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this. When asked if the devs would be interested in creating a battle royale game with the Star Wars license, Asmussen's reply was actually rather promising:
"I'd love to see a Star Wars battle royale, or maybe call it Yaddle-Royale? But there's no plans for that right now."
You read it here first folks. Or rather you read that they'd like to do it but have no plans for it right now. So don't go shouting your mouth off about it just yet, okay?
