Amazon's Lord Of The Rings MMO Could Come As Early As 2022

Amazon has to release 'New World' first though.

Every so often some genius manages to create and curate a world we just want to dive right into. Whether that's Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher series or the Marvel universe as a whole - there are some truly irresistible worlds that translate fantastically into a gaming world. And when it comes to worlds we want to explore every inch of, Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings is top of the list.

So it seems like good news that The Lord of the Rings MMO developed by Athlon Games and Amazon is going to be out sooner rather than later. PC Gamer reports that we might be diving into the free-to-play MMO in 2022 according to some financial documents regarding the Tencent acquisition of Leyou (of which Athlon is a part of).

It's not confirmed for 2022, but there is an indication in the report that it's pretty likely. The section the date is mentioned refers to the current expenditures of the Leylou Group which includes five game developments. Transformers, Civilization Online, and The Lord of the Rings MMO are "expected to be launched from Q4 2021 to Q1 2023". It seems, therefore, pretty likely that we'll see The Lord of the Rings game in 2022 but at latest early 2023.

Amazon Game Studios and Athlon Games are now working together to build this game and we hope it's everything we want from Middle-earth. However, Amazon Game Studios specifically has had its fair share of difficulties this year with its own development of Crucible - a third-person arena shooter that despite critical appreciation, failed to draw an audience after gameplay criticisms.

The studio wound down that development after several months and redistributed the staff working on the project to their current MMO project New World. If New World performs, it will be a good indicator of if The Lord of the Ring MMO will follow suit.
