Amazon's 'New World' MMO Considers Jeff Bezos A Swear Word

Amazon's long-awaited MMO New World has gotten off to one heck of a start. At the time of writing, the game has achieved a peak of 707,000 concurrent players, and is currently second in the Steam charts - just behind CS:GO.

With so many thousands of players flocking to the game, it's perhaps inevitable that folk would want to try and have some fun at Amazon's expense, isn't it? Unfortunately, it's emerged that New World will block anyone attempting to name their character after the company or its founder Jeff Bezos... much in the same way it'd block anyone attempting to use profanity in their name. New World considers Jeff Bezos to be a swear word, basically. I'm not sure I disagree.

This wonderful discovery was made by PC Gamer, who made a point of seeing what names they could get away with in the MMO. "Bezos", "Amazon", and similar variations such as "JeffB" and "Be Zos" have all been marked as "cannot be used".

This is the same message that comes up when you try to enter a rude word, and not the one that notifies you whether or not a name has already been taken, just in case you were thinking most of the Bezos names had simply already been snapped up.

There is hope for anyone looking to pay tribute to the space-faring CEO entrepreneur, however. If you're creative enough, there are certain variations Amazon never considered. PC Gamer attempted to use the name " Beff Jezos", but discovered it was already in use by another player who had thought of it first.

It's not entirely clear why New World has banned the Bezos name and variations thereof, but I'd assume the billionaire doesn't want people creating spoof accounts and taking the piss out of him in game. That would certainly be a tragedy, wouldn't it?
