'Among Us 2' Has Been Cancelled - But The Developer Has A Plan

The multiplayer space whodunnit sim Among Us is one of the biggest games in the world right now. With a daily concurrent peak of 388,000 players on PC in the last month alone, it's currently bigger than the likes of Player Unknown's Battlegrounds, and is only slightly less popular than juggernauts like Counter Strike: Global Offensive and DOTA 2.

Given the newfound popularity of developer Innersloth's meme-tastic party game, you might be surprised to learn that Among Us 2 has already been cancelled. The sequel was announced less than month ago, and has now been consigned to the bin - but Innersloth wants you all to know that this cancellation is actually a good thing for all of us.

In its announcement, Innersloth confirmed that the ideas and resources it was going to put into Among Us 2 will instead be invested in the current Among Us. Much of this decision comes down to how big the game currently is, and the developer's reluctance to split that playerbase by releasing a second game. Makes sense.

"We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1," the post reads. "All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1. This is probably the more difficult choice because it means going deep into the core code of the game and reworking several parts of it."

Clearly this will be a ton of work for Innersloth, but it seems to be the right call. Among Us is only growing in popularity thanks to its accessible and constantly hilarious gameplay. Clearly the developer wants to focus all its attention on helping the game be the best it can possibly be before moving on to anything new.

But will all of this new work result in the console version of Among Us that so many of us are desperate for? Innersloth has stressed that it's something it's been thinking about, but that it wouldn't be the easiest thing to make in reality.

"[A console port] is something we're starting to talk about," studio programmer Forest Willard explained during a Twitch stream last week. "But we'd have to write a system for quick comms. It'd basically be for randoms, like Rocket League. I don't know if we'd be able to implement console voice chat or not. I know one of the first things we want to add is a friend's list-type account system because it's real hard to do anything without that s***."
