Among Us is a multiplayer party game that is seeing serious success right now, securing a daily concurrent peak of 388,000 players on PC in the last month. That's more than Player Unknown's Battlegrounds, and Among Us is only surpassed by the stalwart Counter Strike: Global Offensive and the unshakeable DOTA 2. Cor.

To the uninitiated, Among Us is a little like the real-life party game, Werewolf, or the TV show, Trapped!. That show was a banger. Anyway. Set on a spaceship, players will complete tasks in various rooms to prep the vessel for departure. However, one or more players are Impostors, and their objective is to sabotage the mission without being discovered. They'll need to blend in by pretending to do jobs, and kill their targets while framing an innocent bystander for their crime.

The other players will work together to identify who is making mischief by undoing the Impostor's sabotages, checking security cameras to watch other crewmates, and calling emergency meetings to accuse the Impostor. If the players complete their tasks and the ship launches, or if they correctly eject the Impostor out of the airlock, they win. If the Impostor kills all other crewmates, they win.

Expectedly, Among Us is ripe for silly shenanigans as players shrug off accusations while standing next to a very dead body, and it's perfect for gaming nights during lockdown.

Though the game was actually released in 2018, Twitch streamers such as Sodapoppin, Pewdiepie, Shroud, and Ninja have brought increased attention to the indie game in 2020. Right now, Among Us has more than 265,000 viewers on the platform, placing it ahead of Modern Warfare, Fortnite, and Valorant. Furthermore, the game saw 18.4 million mobile downloads in August, which is nearly eight times the number of downloads compared to the previous month. In September, another 41.9 million players downloaded it on mobiles, proving its stratospheric success.

A sequel is in the works, as announced by InnerSloth last week. The developer isn't sure when that will materialise, because it's "extremely hard to add more things without breaking existing things" in Among Us. We've all been there. The sequel will stick to the crewmates versus imposters sitch, but will adjust team balances, improve matchmaking, and allow for more moderation. There also might be new roles, but InnerSloth hasn't got anything set in stone just yet.
