As the Dungeons & Dragons brand continues to enjoy worldwide popularity, new ways to play within its fantasy stylings, to open it up to new audiences, are paramount. Step forward Hidden Path Entertainment, with a project that's sure to tickle both fair-weather and committed D&Ders alike.

As PC Gamer reports, Hidden Path - best known for working alongside Valve on the Counter-Strike shooter franchise - has lifted the lid on a brand-new, open-world Dungeons & Dragons video game.

Whitney Beltrán (aka 'Strix'), narrative director on Hidden Path's new game (and who also worked on the stunning-looking HoloVista, recently), posted on Twitter, as follows:

"The cat is finally out of the bag! We are making a AAA, third-person, open-world fantasy RPG that will be taking place inside the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. That's right, friends, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS. Maybe you want to come work with me on that."

Beltrán's post quote-tweeted a previous Hidden Path message, from March 2, where the studio also dropped the quiet bombshell that is this ambitious, exciting project - "a AAA, third-person, open-world fantasy RPG that will be taking place inside the Dungeons & Dragons franchise."

Hidden Path is currently advertising for staff for the project, including graphics programmers, senior technical artists, writers and lead graphics programmers.

D&D has a long history with the video games medium, with the first title based on the pen-and-paper adventures coming out in 1980. Baldur's Gate is a successful video game spin-off from D&D's Forgotten Realms campaign, and the third main entry in that series, Baldur's Gate III, is due out in the near future having entered early access in late 2020.

And that's all we really have on this one, for now. No news of a release date, or platforms. But it's exciting, no? Sure it is.
