Respawn Entertainment has been hard at work on its latest offering for Apex Legends, and now is when it all pays off. Season 3 of the battle-royale hit kicks off today, October 1st, with a wide array of fresh content ready for players to jump into and enjoy.
So let's start with the elephant in the room: the new map, named World's Edge. In any game like this, the addition of new maps greatly helps extend its lifespan, with Apex Legends being no different. During Season 2, the previous map of King's Canyon received a nifty update which introduced new points of interest. But for Season 3 Respawn has gone one step further and added a whole new map.
World's Edge is set on the Planet Talos, and within seconds of dropping into action you are hit with new environments and climates to tackle and traverse, in your bid to become the Apex Champion. The colour palette on this map alone is something unseen in Apex before - I certainly recommend dropping somewhere on the outskirts to really appreciate the map for what it is, before pinging every single Mozambique in sight, of course.

One of the map's most interesting new features is a cargo train that rolls through World's Edge, stopping at stations along the way. It has some pretty impressive loot loaded onto it, which is sure to make it a hot dropping point at the start of the match. Be careful though: the train tracks get cut off as the circle shrinks, so make sure you jump off in time. Don't say we didn't warn you.
To complement World's Edge, Respawn has added a brand-new legend to the roster. Following on from the game's previous addition of Wattson, we now have Crypto.
Crypto is a surveillance expert who wields a small drone, which allows him to scout out enemy players ahead. His abilities can be used in a multitude of different scenarios which can help your team get out of sticky situations, whether your team is on the offence or being more defensive. Once you've marked a few enemies with the drone, your teammates will be able to see their positions, giving you the upper hand in the forthcoming battle.
Crypto's abilities will suit those who play in teams that continuously communicate, rather than players who drop in and abandon the rest of their team. If you coordinate Crypto's drone with the rest of your team, it can give you a serious advantage over the opposition - until, of course, you run up against another Crypto on another team who is better than you.
Crypto's ultimate ability utilises his prized drone, too. When fully charged, it emits a powerful EMP pulse which can partially destroy enemy shields and any equipment in the blast radius. If you ask me, this is the perfect way to weaken the enemy before charging in, all guns blazing.
The Charge Rifle is the newest addition to the in-game armoury. Titanfall series players will remember this energy weapon from back in the day; however, this version shoots a large laser when charged, rather than short bursts. It packs a serious punch when charged, doing up to 90 damage with each shot. If it's a comparison you're after, the Charge Rifle is very similar to Halo's Spartan Laser. As you fire it, it gradually increases in damage, before dealing a heavy blow at the end. As you can imagine though, such a powerful weapon eats up ammo, so you'll definitely have to loot plenty along the way.
Alongside the new map, weapon and legend, Respawn is also introducing changes to ranked play following the success of the first series. More details on this can be found on the game's official website.
