Apple Makes More From Gaming Than Sony, Microsoft, And Nintendo Combined

Rather amusingly, Apple has a pretty bad reputation for gaming. Large triple-A games often come to PC and consoles but rarely will they ever make it to Apple products too. You may see people using Macbooks in coffee shops and lecture halls but I've rarely, if ever, seen one as part of a gaming set-up. Though we might laugh about how the games rarely come to Apple products, Apple is quietly the biggest name in gaming.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Apple made more profit in the gaming spheres than Microsoft, Nintendo, Activision, and Sony combined in 2019. That is an unfathomable amount of money, we simply can't imagine all those zeros. According to WSJ a report it carried out exploring the profits of the corporation confirmed that Apple earned in excess of $8.5 billion.

Epic Games put out this video as a statement against Apple in 2020...

This money, of course, is made through the App Store, Apple's own market place which has been at the centre of the Epic Games vs Apple lawsuit. As this storefront takes a cut of the profits from the games popular on there, Apple hardly needs to lift a finger to be making billions from other developers.

Interestingly, you may have noticed that these results are from 2019, so may not exactly reflect the current market as Sony and Microsoft released their new-generation consoles in 2020. Though the console releases are not likely to have changed Apple's position as top dog, it'll be interesting how much of a dent they made in the last couple of years.

Additionally, the ruling on the Epic vs Apple lawsuit means that Apple will have to allow developers to use other means of paying for in-game currency or microtransactions that don't directly go through Apple's systems, which could cut profits. The ruling decided that Apple was "permanently restrained and enjoined from prohibiting developers from including in their apps and their metadata buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms." Though Epic Games failed to prove Apple was a monopoly, this was a big win for developers as a whole.

As the WSJ notes, China has also become a threat to the gaming profits at Apple, as new legislation regarding how many hours young people can spend playing video games will effect the amount that companies like Tencent will profit from potentially millions of players.

So, though Apple has a huge amount of success in the gaming realm, its future as the biggest gaming company out there is more uncertain than you may think.
