The Assassin's Creed series has never been one to shy away from violence, but it sounds like Assassin's Creed Valhalla will be taking things to another level. Much of the recently shown gameplay focuses on our viking hero Eivor hacking and slashing their way through ye olde England in surprisingly gory fashion.

As it turns out, the upcoming game will let player get really up close and personal with their victims. The recently released gameplay overview trailer has a section towards the end in which Eivor rams the hidden blade into an enemy's chest. So far so Assassin's Creed.

However, things take a turn when we get a Mortal Kombat-style X-ray close up in which we actually see the blade sliding inside and tearing up its victim. It's nasty stuff, but also kind of awesome. As it turns out, this isn't a one-off cinematic flourish for the gameplay event, but an actual feature that players will be able to trigger.

As reported by Access The Animus (thanks, PC Gamer) game director Benoit Richer confirmed on Twitter that the X-raycution (an awesome term I just made up, you're welcome) "happens during gameplay," so you can enjoy it till you've had your twisted fill of gore.

Clearly the idea has been shamelessly cribbed from Mortal Kombat, a franchise which relishes in presenting players with incredibly graphic X-ray shots of breaking bones and punctured organs. But who cares? If you're going to make a game with a focus on brutal violence, you might as well borrow from the best.

I would also imagine that those of a squeamish disposition need never see this feature, if they don't want to. Both Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey had an option to toggle the more excessive gore on and off, so don't worry about being exposed to gritty money shots every time you go in for a kill.

It sounds like a pretty awesome new feature in all honesty, to the point that I'm kind of surprised Ubisoft didn't go into more detail on it during last week's event. I guess since Assassin's Creed Valhalla isn't out till November 17th, there's still plenty of time for Ubisoft to share more on the upcoming open-world RPG.

As it stands, between gory close-up executions and the ability to recruit cats as you roam the land... I'm picking up what Ubisoft is putting down.
