Avatar has just snatched the box office crown back from Avengers: Endgame's, more than ten years after its original release. The James Cameron film has crept up on the Marvel cinematic universe's biggest film to once again become the highest-grossing film of all time - but there is still a chance for Endgame to come back and rule once again.

Avatar returned to some theatres in China recently, allowing people to experience the film on the big screen. As Deadline notes, Avatar has gone on to earn another $21.1 million on top of its original earnings. Worldwide, the film now sits on an impressive $2.81 billion. The original run of the film earned $230 million in China when it was released back in January 2010, so to make another $21.1 mill in a weekend is really impressive, and a good indication of how the second movie may be received when it is released in December 2022.

As for its competitor, Avengers: Endgame released in 2019 and earned a huge $2.797 billion in the box office. It wasn't such a surprise that the movie ended up with the highest-grossing film title, as you probably know, the lead up to the release of the film was a decade worth of films that contributed to the hype.

Endgame had millions of fans of the franchise on its side however Avatar was considered a spectacle - 3D filmmaking hadn't been utilised in such an impressive way up until its release and people went to go experience the film in droves. Although Avatar currently has the record once again, it wouldn't be a surprise if after the pandemic Disney did its own rerun of Endgame in cinemas to reclaim it. I mean, I'd go see it again if I got the chance - that moment with the portals still gives me chills.
