New 'Back 4 Blood' Trailer Shows Off Massive Hordes Of Left 4 Dead-Inspired Enemies

You'd be forgiven for assuming that Back 4 Blood doesn't have much of a story. After all, much of the focus on Warner Bros. and Turtle Rock Studios Left 4 Dead spiritual sequel so far has been on the fact that you can merrily blast away zombies with friends - just like you could back in 2008. As far as selling points go, that's a big one.

However, Turtle Rock has just dropped a new trailer for Back 4 Blood that reminds us that actually, this is a game that will be made up of characters we'll actually give a crap about. Oh, and there are still plenty of massive Left 4 Dead-inspired monsters in the trailer too, just in case you really don't care about the human survivors.

Take a look for yourself below!

The latest trailer is all about meeting the eight playable "Cleaners" (survivors) who are tasked with teaming up to take down the Ridden (zombies). You can also see some of the chilling Ridden variants that you'll meet, including Breakers, Orgres, Snitches, and Hags, the last of which looks like it'll be a horrifying updated version of the Left 4 Dead Witches.

The eight playable Cleaners - Holly, Walker, Doc, Karlee, Jim, Hoffman, Evangelo, and Mom - all have their own unique game abilities, backgrounds, and motivations. Shall we meet them? Let's meet them.

Holly wades into battle with a nail-spiked baseball bat that she calls "Dottie", which is in no way a rip off of any character from The Walking Dead. A press release tells us that "Holly's resilience and never-say-die attitude helps boost the team's morale and is often seen as a ray of light in the darkness of the apocalypse."

Walker is a former Army Ranger and veteran with plenty of frontline combat experience. He may be a man of few words, but he's respected by his fellow Cleaners.

Doc is a career-focused medic with a bedside manner that "can take some getting used to." You'll want her around when you're on the edge of death, but she's also a great shot to have by your side for all occasions. Then we have Karlee, a mysterious survivor who's won over the trust of her fellow Cleaners with a proven ability to cut through hordes of Ridden. Jim, meanwhile, is an outdoorsman with plenty of expertise in hunting and trapping, and always has a good sense of his surroundings.

Hoffman is described as a "meticulous individual, enthusiastic prepper, and conspiracy theorist" with the survival skills needed to see him through. Evangelo, the youngest member of the team, has the least experience but knows how to handle himself in a fight.

Finally there's Mom. Having lost her son during the game's apocalyptic mayhem, she's dedicated herself to leading the Cleaners on a journey with one simple goal: to make the Ridden pay.

It certainly sounds as if Turtle Rock is aiming to tell a story with a real bite this time around, if you'll excuse the pun. Back 4 Blood is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series consoles and PC on October 12, 2021.
