The upcoming open-world Batman adventure Gotham Knights has been delayed to 2022, developer Warner Bros. Montreal has confirmed. In a post on Twitter the studio revealed that the co-operative multiplayer superhero title will no longer launch this year in an effort to deliver "the best possible experience" to players. It also confirmed that it would show off more of Gotham Knights soon.

"We are giving the game more time to deliver the best possible experience for players," the post read. "Thank you to our amazing fans for your tremendous support of Gotham Knights. We look forward to showcasing more of the game in the coming months."

It's not surprising to see Gotham Knights pushed back, given the scope and ambition of the title... plus the fact that the staff at WB. Montreal is presumably having to work on the game remotely like most studios right now. Hogwarts Legacy was also delayed to 2022 just a few months ago, and experts warned at the time that it was highly unlikely to be the last major title pushed out of 2021.

For those who might have been out of the bat-loop, Gotham Knights is a multiplayer superhero game that lets players choose between Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood. Each character has their own unique abilities and skills as they explore an open world Gotham City in the aftermath of the apparent death of Bruce Wayne/Batman, and all the ensuing chaos you'd expect from such an event.

"Batman is dead," reads the debut trailer's description. "It is now up to the Batman Family - Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin - to protect Gotham City, bring hope to its citizens, discipline to its cops, and fear to its criminals. You must evolve into the new Dark Knight and save Gotham from chaos."

While Gotham Knights supports single-player, WB. Montreal has stressed that a lot of the open world and missions within have been designed with multiple players in mind. That certainly sounds ambitious, and the kind of thing that I'm sure we all want to see given the time and care it needs.
