Zack Snyder's relationship with DC superheroes might be over for now, but the Man Of Steel and Justice League director still has plenty of ideas left in the chamber.

We already knew that he had a number of wildly ambitions ideas for Justice League sequels, and that he wasn't done with Henry Cavill's Superman. But we're now learning that he wants to adapt one of the all-time classic Batman stories: Frank Millar's seminal 1986 graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns.

Take a look at the upcoming Batman adventure Gotham Knights below!

For those who have never read it, The Dark Knight Returns revolves around a much older Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement to fight crime in a dystopian Gotham City that's been left to rot. The book covers some notable events, including a final confrontation with the Joker, and Batman knocking several shades of crap out of Superman in a brutal brawl.

Snyder borrowed several elements from the book for Batman VS. Superman, from the bat-suit itself to the older and more violent take on the character. Christopher Nolan also took inspiration from Millar The Dark Knight Rises in some respects. But outside of a two-part animated feature released in 2013 we've yet to see a straight-up big screen adaptation of the book.

"I think it would just be its own thing," Snyder told the Happy, Sad, Confused of his plans. "I would do it 100 percent Watchmen style. I don't even think it'd be that expensive, to be honest. It's pretty gritty."

Snyder added that he'd probably bring in a whole new cast, replacing Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill with a new Batman and Superman. I'd like to take this opportunity to suggest Josh Brolin as an older Batman, if I could?

For now, it's unlikely Warner Bros. has any further plans to work with Zack Snyder on DC characters. 2022 will see the release of The Batman, a brand-new take on the character from director Matt Reeves that puts Robert Pattinson in the cape and cowl at an early stage of Bruce Wayne's crimefighting career.
