Anyone worried that Battlefield 2042 would be lacking in naval action can rest their pretty little heads: despite ship-based combat not being present in the reveal trailer earlier this month, DICE has confirmed that the upcoming shooter will absolutely feature naval battles.

Longtime fans of the series will know that one of Battlefield's biggest selling points has always been the way it offers players seamless battles across land, air, and sea. Ever since the series' origins in Battlefield 1942, hopping into a naval vehicle and blasting away at enemies has been a crucial and much-loved feature.

There was some understandable concern, then, when, the Battlefield 2042 trailer (and its subsequent gameplay reveal) came and went without a whiff of watery conflict. As you can see below...

Fortunately DICE design director Daniel Berlin has stressed that naval combat will be returning in Battlefield 2042 as part of several new modes. In an extended interview Xbox Games Showcase (thanks, Fraghero), Berlin teased the 'All-Out Warfare' game mode and what we can expect from it. Warfare, unsurprisingly. And all out warfare, at that.

"This is the place you go in 2042 when you want to have those classic Battlefield experiences," he explained. "There's a massive war where there's air, land and sea just coming together in these massive battles."

While it's important to note we still haven't officially seen naval combat in action in Battlefield 2042, it'd be kind of odd for Berlin to specifically reference "land, air, and sea" if the game didn't feature this staple of the franchise.

It's clear not all of the game's maps will support naval combat just based on their geography, but there are at least one or two with enough water knocking about to support some real ship-based carnage. We should find out more ahead of Battlefield 2042's official launch on October 22 this year.
