Usually when a developer announces that a game won't launch with a certain feature, there's uproar. In the case of Battlefield 2042, however, it seems fans have been more than happy to learn that the upcoming shooter won't have a ranked or esports mode upon release.

Justin Wiebe, senior design director for Ripple Effect Studios told Battlefield Nation in a recent interview that there are no real plans for ranked modes in Battlefield 2042 unless there's real demand from the community.

Take a look at Battlefield 2042 in action below!

"Yeah, so so there's no plan to have any kind of ranked or esport mode at launch," Wiebe said. "This is something that obviously we want to hear more about from the community. If again, this - I'm using this phrase a lot - but if that's something that's important to the community, we'd like to hear about it, and you know, we'll kind of see what happens after that."

While some fans have reacted to the news with a touch of disappointment, many agree that Battlefield has never really been about properly competitive play.

"Not every game needs to have a ranked mode or competitive in my opinion," reasoned one user on Twitter. "BF games are not designed for this. I miss when games didn't care about being comp and were made just for fun and chill."

"'I'm not hopping on Battlefield to play ranked lol," joked another. "Just smack me with a tornado and send me on my way."

It'll also be entirely possible for players to build more competitive modes via the Portal sandbox mode if they really want. It might not be the "real" deal, but it should keep those craving a more intense experience happy while everyone else has a more chill time. Or at least as chill a time as a game set in a constantly changing battlefield filled with explosions and hurricanes can offer.
