Back to the Battlefield.

Electronic Arts has shared a few new choice details about its upcoming Battlefield game which, for the time being, we'll be referring to as Battlefield 6.

During the publisher's latest investors call, we learned that the next instalment of the popular FPS franchise is coming to next-gen consoles by holiday 2021, which means it's roughly a year away. Even more exciting was the news that EA and developer DICE will be sharing more details - which will presumably include a first-look - in the spring.

"DICE is creating our next Battlefield game with never-before-seen scale," EA said during the call (thanks GameSpot). "The technical advancements of the new consoles are allowing the team to deliver a truly next-gen vision for the franchise. We have hands-on playtesting underway internally."

EA CEO Andrew Wilson also shared some info on how the game has been progressing, and it sounds pretty promising. He revealed that DICE has been given an extra year of development to realise its "true next-gen vision" for the game, which is terribly exciting, isn't it?

"We have rallied that entire studio [DICE] around the development of Battlefield specifically," he said. "We've given them an extra year of development to ensure that they can, in fact, build a true next-gen vision around that game. DICE is one of the most talented studios on the planet, and we've been able to add leadership from our EA Sports business in David Rutter who understands both live services and the rigor of development. We've brought in talent from across the industry who have really bolstered our belief and our confidence in our ability to launch that game next year, so lots more to come in the next couple of months."

EA previously confirmed that Battlefield 6 would launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2021, but this latest update has narrowed down that release window substantially. While he haven't seen very much at all of the upcoming game in action, apart from a brief but impressive shot of a soldier's face, it's widely believed that Battlefield 6 will return the franchise to a modern-day setting.

We've also heard that this will be the largest game in the series by some distance, offering maps and battles on an absolutely massive scale. Writing on Twitter a few months back, reliable industry insider Tom Henderson claimed that the game's core multiplayer is being built around the classic 32-vs-32 battles, but there are numerous maps designed for closer to 128 players. Oof.
