EA has a lot of different projects planned for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Among them, of course, is a next-gen Battlefield title. We'll be referring to this new entry in the DICE FPS franchise as Battlefield 6 for now, for the sake of clarity.

There's a lot we don't know about Battlefield 6 for now, but we did get the briefest of looks at the game in action during last week's EA play. The work-in-progress footage teased epic battles and some seriously next-level facial animations, and now EA's Chief Studio Officer Laura Miele has shared a little more info.

"Our studios are taking their crazy ambitious ideas and making them real," she explained. "Every console generation DICE sets the bar for excellence in audio and visual presentation. We are creating epic battles at a scale and fidelity unlike anything you've experienced before."

Despite some of the models in the EA Play footage looking more WWII era, the most recent Battlefield 6 rumours suggest that the game will return the franchise to a modern day setting. Earlier this month, industry insider Tom Henderson suggested that the new game will be inspired by 2011's Battlefield 3, something a lot of fans were pleased to hear.

2016's Battlefield 1 took the shooter back to World War I, while 2018's Battlefield V offered up a recreation of World War II. Both games were largely well received, but perhaps the success of the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot has convinced EA to nudge its own premiere FPS franchise back towards a contemporary setting.

Hopefully we'll learn more about Battlefield 6 soon. A release date doesn't sound too far off. Just a few months ago, EA essentially confirmed that Battlefield 6 would be released in 2021, noting that DICE had nearly wrapped up work Star Wars Battlefront II and Battlefield V.

"The team at DICE is working on the standalone Battlefield V update releasing this summer, and continuing their work on delivering Community Games," an EA spokesperson said.

"While the studio's vision for Star Wars Battlefront II is now complete with this week's The Battle on Scarif Update, the servers, in-game challenges, recurring events and game support will continue as the game lives on with players and the community. We're looking forward to hearing players' stories for both games, for years to come.

"Longer term, the studio is focused on the future of Battlefield that we'll be bringing to players in 2021."
