A reliable industry insider has suggested that the in-development Battlefield 6 is going big. Seriously big. Tom Henderson, a leaker with a proven track record when it comes to all things EA, has offered fans a little tease of what to expect from the upcoming FPS in terms of scale.
Writing on Twitter, Henderson claimed that the game's core multiplayer is being designed around the classic 32-vs-32 battles that fans of the franchise are familiar with. Despite this, he believes that Battefield 6 will be capable of much, much more than that, with battles taking place across maps designed for more than 128 players.
Henderson wouldn't confirm whether or not this means DICE will introduce 64-vs-64 modes to Battlefield 6, but he did claim that EA and DICE are considering having another crack at the battle royale genre in response to the success of Call Of Duty: Warzone.
By all accounts, is sounds very much like the upcoming entry will be the biggest and most ambitious Battlefield to date. EA teased the massive scope of the upcoming game during EA Play earlier this summer, promising that Battlefield 6 will "create epic battles at a scale and fidelity unlike anything you've experienced before". Colour me intrigued.
While we still don't know exactly what era the new game will be set in, rumours do suggest that the FPS will return the franchise to a modern day setting. Although again, the teaser footage didn't do much to confirm or deny these reports.
A few months back, Henderson implied that the new game will be inspired by 2011's Battlefield 3, a popular entry set in the modern day. 2016's Battlefield 1 took the shooter back to World War I, while 2018's Battlefield V was focused on World War II. It's been some time since Battlefield has taken place in a contemporary setting, but it seems likely the success of 2019's Modern Warfare reboot convinced EA and DICE to head back towards the modern world for Battlefield 6.
In terms of a release date for the title, it sounds like 2021 is looking the most likely. Just a few months ago, EA basically confirmed that Battlefield 6 would be released in 2021, noting that DICE had already pretty much wrapped up work on Star Wars Battlefront II and Battlefield V.
"The team at DICE is working on the standalone Battlefield V update releasing this summer, and continuing their work on delivering Community Games," an EA spokesperson said.
"While the studio's vision for Star Wars Battlefront II is now complete with this week's The Battle on Scarif Update, the servers, in-game challenges, recurring events and game support will continue as the game lives on with players and the community. We're looking forward to hearing players' stories for both games, for years to come.
"Longer term, the studio is focused on the future of Battlefield that we'll be bringing to players in 2021."
