Developer Naughty Dog has confirmed that it'll be changing the name of its annual The Last Of Us celebration from Outbreak Day to The Last Of Us Day... but there are still plenty of exciting things planned.
Fans of the post-apocalyptic franchise will know that September 26th is the anniversary of the fictional outbreak that occurred in-game and turned the world into a deadly land filled with killer mushroom people. For obvious reasons, Naughty Dog decided that celebrating something called Outbreak Day in 2020 might be in poor taste... hence the name change.
As we look forward to the new-and-improved The Last Of Us day on September 26th, Naughty Dog has teased what we can expect from the big day. In a post shared on Twitter (which you can see below) Naughty Dog explained its reasoning behind the name change, and promised that it has a "lot of exciting things planned" to share with us.
"For the last 7 years, September 26th has been our opportunity to recognize and celebrate the incredible passion of The Last of Us community," the statement reads. "However, as we thought about the events of the last year and the challenges we all continue to face with COVID-19, we didn't feel right continuing on under the 'Outbreak Day' banner. While the name and date are rooted in the fiction of the game, September 26th means so much more than lore. It's about showing our appreciation for our fans.
"That's why, this Saturday and moving forward, September 26th will be known as The Last of Us Day - a name that not only acknowledges the world around us, but also reflects the growth of the community as we welcome millions of new players with the release of The Last of Us Part 2. We have a lot of exciting things planned and we can't wait to share them with you in just a few days!"
Last year Naughty Dog celebrated Outbreak Day with a slew of new details on The Last Of Us Part 2, as well as a bunch of new merch and some other goodies. We're hoping that this year the developer will pull back the curtain on the The Last Of Us Part 2's multiplayer expansion, footage of which leaked online a few months back. Watch this space.
