'Black Myth: Wukong' Shows Off Fearsome New Boss In Stunning Gameplay

Game Science has dropped a new trailer for Black Myth: Wukong, its stunning Souls-like RPG inspired by medieval Chinese mythology. This one celebrates the beginning of the Year of the Ox, and there's a behemothic boss battle between a minotaur and the protagonist which will teach you not to grab the bull by the horns.
The ox is the second animal in the Chinese zodiac, after the resourceful rat tricked the ox to give them a ride to the finish line. According to this lunar calendar, each animal is associated with certain characteristics and events: in the case of those born in 2021, "oxen are the hard workers in the background, intelligent and reliable, but never demanding praise." Funnily enough, this tallies with Game Science's approach to showing off Black Myth: Wukong's progress. Last year, the game received heaps and heaps of praise from the media and gamers alike, and in response, the studio said that it would "hide" to ensure their focus remained on improving the game and that they wouldn't get caught up in the excitement for Black Myth: Wukong.

Their efforts are paying off, evidently. The new trailer takes us through never-before-seen gameplay, set in a sumptuous yet arid area filled with gnarled trees and destroyed buildings. The combat is looking fantastic, I've got to say, with Sun Wukong employing acrobatic dodges and freezing abilities to get the upper hand on his enemies. In the original novel, the character seeks the Tao in order to discover the secret to living forever.
Over the course of his journey, he learns 72 methods of transformation, which lets him transform into anything that exists. Though Game Science has been reticent to reveal the story of Black Myth: Wukong, we do see the protagonist transform into a creature made of pure rock to deflect an onslaught of arrows. In another battle, he splits himself into three copies of the enemy, and uses their own attack against them. The pièce de résistance is surely the cinematic start to a boss battle between Sun Wukong and a giant minotaur. Smashing through a stone gate and standing taller than the houses surrounding them, they challenge the player before the trailer fades to black. It just gets cooler and cooler, doesn't it?
Black Myth: Wukong comes to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2023.
