'Black Ops Cold War' Dev Says Divisive Scorestreak System Won't Reward Bad Players

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is bringing a ton of changes to the multiplayer formula, as any new entry in the long-running franchise should. Of course as with any adjustments to a series that has been around for as long as Call Of Duty, there are certain changes that fans are a little more wary of than others.

One of the more substantial tweaks coming to Treyarch's upcoming FPS regards the multiplayer scorestreak system. As CharlieIntel reports, Black Ops Cold War will be the first Treyarch-developed Call Of Duty in which the scorestreaks don't reset upon death. While it's better for you to build up as many kills as possible before dying, you'll also be able to build towards streaks over the course of a single game - regardless of how much you kick the bucket.

Needless to say, this caused some controversy when it was first announced. Some of the more seasoned players out there expressed concern that this system will allow lower-skilled players to build up streaks with more ease, allowing them something of an "unfair" advantage.

Treyarch has since confirmed that there's a cooldown timer on each streak which prevents spam. It'll also take a good number of kills in order to earn the higher streaks in game. Speaking as someone who is absolutely awful at Call Of Duty, I can tell you that even if deaths don't reset my streak, I'll still struggle to get a good number of kills. You probably don't need to worry about players like me.

Treyarch's lead designer Tony Flame then took to Twitter to assure the community that earning the very best streaks will still require you to get multiple kills without dying. He stressed that this new system has not been designed to reward bad players, but to give everyone more of a chance at earning streaks while making sure the best of the best still feel like they've earned the higher-tier streaks.

As someone who sucks at every Call Of Duty game ever released, that sounds like a pretty fair middle-ground to me. There's definitely a line between making sure those of us that don't play religiously still have a decent shot without making it so that being good at the game loses all meaning. We'll have to wait until the game goes live to really get a feel for how this works, but on paper it seems promising enough.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War betas go live next month, so read up on how to get involved here and we can try out the new systems together. Doesn't that sound like fun?
