Borderlands 3 has been out for a month now but Gearbox isn't resting on its laurels, instead detailing a plan of new content and updates in a roadmap. A lot of new features are coming to the game, like a target practice dummy and the ability to skip cutscenes, as well as overhauls to features like Mayhem Mode.
"In the late stages of the game when Mayhem Mode is active, we've found that player companions are reportedly not performing as well as we had expected," Gearbox writes in its roadmap. "To address this, we're looking at how to adjust damage according to the relevant skills and gear. The goal here is to make sure we have as many viable character builds as possible." So Fl4k's pets and Zane's clone will be much more effective.
It's not just the companions who are changing, though. Mayhem mode is getting expanded and overhauled. These are coming in multiple updates, with the first being released as part of the Takedown at Maliwan's Blacksite. "Expect a significant challenge when it debuts, with tougher enemies that reward players with highly synergized character builds," Gearbox writes. "A new batch of Legendary gear will also only drop while in Mayhem 4 to reward those players who are truly up for the challenge."
The mode is also getting "more UI support, new Mayhem Modifiers that change gameplay more dramatically, Mayhem playlists, new rewards, and additional levels of Mayhem to work through."
Gearbox is also adding the ability to skip cutscenes, which is good news for people who are replaying the game and are less focused on the story. "This is much easier said than done," Gearbox explains. "Under the hood, the game may activate critical events based on cinematics. In order to make sure mission progression isn't negatively impacted, we need to inspect each cinematic and make sure those events still work correctly. We have a few ideas on how to tackle this problem and expect to have a solution soon."
Also, if you want to test out your weapons outside of combat, Gearbox is adding a shooting range to Sanctuary III. I'm hoping the target dummies are based on Claptrap.
Finally, Gearbox is also working to make boss bottles more rewarding with new, dedicated loot pools. "You'll be able to go to a specific boss to get the specific gear you're looking for," Gearbox says. "We're working out which bosses get which gear right now and expect this to be ready as part of the November patch as well."
So there's a lot of new stuff coming to Borderlands 3 in the future.
