Ghost Recon Breakpoint's not had an easy time since launch. It sold and reviewed poorly, with a Metacritic score of just 57. Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot was quite open about this in a financial call earlier this year, saying "The changes we brought to [Breakpoint's] core gameplay have generated a very negative reaction ... it has also been rejected by an important portion of the community."
This has motivated Ubisoft to take the community's feedback and make significant changes to Breakpoint, and a recent poll suggests players want it to be much more like Wildlands, the last Ghost Recon game.
When Ghost Recon became an open-world shooter in Wildlands, Ubisoft supported four-player co-op but also let you play with an AI squad if you didn't want to go online. This was dropped in Breakpoint - you could still go online to play with other humans, but in single player you had to tackle the island of Auroa's challenges on your lonesome. Breakpoint also added a new gear system to Ghost Recon. Inspired by games like The Division 2 and Destiny, your enemies would drop pieces of gear and equipment that had individual levels which combined to an overall gear level - this score would then determine what parts of the island you were ready to tackle.
Players have overwhelmingly voted to reverse these changes. More than 50% of poll respondents want AI teammates added to Breakpoint, and over 35% of players want the gear score and tiered loot system removed. Ubisoft is going to do both. In a letter discussing the team's plans for the games, Ubisoft wrote: "We are working on a more radical and immersive version of Ghost Recon Breakpoint. We also want to let you tailor your experience to the way you want to enjoy the game, since freedom of choice has always been part of the Ghost Recon DNA."
Ubisoft also says that AI teammates will be added to Breakpoint but it "is a major undertaking that will still require time".
Other changes players requested were the ability to sell all your weapons and gear at once, rather than individually selling off items (which can get pretty time consuming), and improvements to the enemy's AI. While Breakpoint's soldiers can put up a good fight, they tend not to behave too intelligently against you, making full use of cover and their numbers against you.
While what Ubisoft describes is a significant undertaking, it is a publisher with a history of offering significant post-launch support. The Division, For Honor, and even Wildlands have had years of updates, often redesigning aspects of the original games that the community didn't gel with.
