While Bungie may have split from Activision to work on Destiny solo, it doesn't want to become a one series company. It's currently planning on releasing a new franchise in the coming years, all while it transforms Destiny with expansions and updates.
"By 2025 we have a pretty specific path to make sure we transform Destiny and that we have other franchises within the marketplace," Bungie's CEO Pete Parsons told IGN. He explained that part of the team's vision is to become a "multi-franchise entertainment company".
Parsons also talked about becoming a publishing group, suggesting Bungie may work on developing more than just its own games. Though, it could also mean expanding series like Destiny beyond just new video games. After all, Bungie was still working on Halo when Microsoft was trying to get a movie about the Master Chief made, and it was part of some of the planning of the tie-in tv series.
Personally, I'd love to see Destiny fleshed out with things like board games, comics, and, maybe even a Netflix series. A Samurai Jack-style anime, anyone?
Parsons didn't explicitly say the franchises would be new games - though, that may well be the case. I'd love to see Bungie return to one of its earlier games: Oni. The third-person action game was strongly inspired by anime like Ghost in the Shell, and had a really intriguing world. A modern take on that series would be exciting to see.
Though the rights for that may be stuck in Limbo, as its original publisher was Gathering of Developers, which was taken over by Take-Two Interactive. Hell, maybe there's more chance of Rockstar making a new Oni than Bungie.
2025 feels like a long way off, especially as Destiny 2's success since separating from Activision is not assured. Hopefully, Bungie isn't planning to only launch it in 2025. For our greedy sakes, hopefully the new series will be released a little sooner.
