Activision has confirmed that the upcoming Call Of Duty installment is still on track to release in the fall/autumn. Call Of Duty games tend to arrive towards the end of the year around October/November, but there was some concern that current events would prevent this from happening. Naturally, we should have known that not even a global pandemic could halt the inevitably of an Call Of Duty release.
The company confirmed the news during its Q1 2020 Financial Call on May 5th (via CharlieIntel), which I'm sure you're just gutted you missed. Activision Blizzard executives said that the new "premium Call Of Duty title" would arrive towards the end of the year.
We still don't know, officially, which studio is working on the upcoming title. With that said, it seems to be something of a widely accepted fact that Treyarch (Black Ops 4) is working on the title with Sledgehammer Games (WWII). There have been rumours that the new game will reboot Black Ops in the same way the most recent title rebooted Modern Warfare, but there's nothing concrete to back that up as of yet.
For now, all we can do is wait. Fortunately, we likely won't have to do so for too long before all is revealed. Call Of Duty games are typically teased around this time of year ahead of a full reveal. Modern Warfare, for example, was first shown off at the end of May. Given we're currently in May, I'd feel pretty confident in suggesting we're no more than a few weeks away from Activision pulling back the curtain on the new game.
You might also be wondering where a new Call Of Duty will leave Warzone, which is in essence a Modern Warfare spinoff. The good news is that developer Infinity Ward has confirmed the free-to-play battle royale is here to stay. Unlike Blackout, which was sadly dropped after little over a year, Warzone will continue to grow and evolve as other "premium" Call Of Duty titles release.
One reliable leaker even suggested that the game's map would get a Cold War-style makeover when Call Of Duty 2020 launches. Between that, and Infinity Ward confirming that the battle royale will be ported to next-gen consoles, I don't think we need to worry about Warzone leaving us before its time.
Besides, Warzone still has plenty of mysteries left for us to solve... like those locked bunkers and strange keycards that have started appearing. I have to know how these are connected before I give up on the game. I just have to.
