Activision officially confirmed last month that Sledgehammer Games would be developing Call Of Duty 2021. The publisher assured fans that the latest entry in the popular franchise was still on track to release this year, in response to reports of a turbulent development and suggestions the game would not be ready before the end of 2021.

"Development is being led by Sledgehammer Games, and the game is looking great and on track for its fall release," Activision Blizzard's COO Daniel Alegre said during an earnings call a few weeks ago.

Sledgehammer's Call Of Duty is rumoured to be another World War 2 shooter, following on from the studio's 2017 effort Call Of Duty: WWII. But while Activision has now made it clear the game will release later this year, a new rumour suggests it may not launch as the kind of complete Call Of Duty experience fans expect.

During a live edition of The Game Mess Show, host and industry insider Jeff Grubb touched once again of Call Of Duty 2021's alleged development problems. He explained that he'd heard much of the development issues were stemming from the game's multiplayer mode, and that there are rumblings that the game could skip multiplayer at launch.

While Grubb made it clear these rumours were far from confirmation, it does line up with previous reports that Activision is planning to release a Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer remaster in 2021 so that fans can still get some form of new(ish) multiplayer fix.

Take this with a huge pinch of salt for now. There's no way Activision or Sledgehammer Games would consider releasing a Call Of Duty game without multiplayer unless they absolutely had to. It's more likely that the game launches with fewer multiplayer modes than usual rather than none at all.

Activision tends to share more information about its new Call Of Duty titles around this time of year, so hopefully we'll learn more soon.
