'Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War' Next-Gen Install Sizes Are A Real Doozy

It's no secret that Call Of Duty games come with alarmingly massive install sizes, especially in recent years. 2019's Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare in particular has become infamous for meaty updates that greedily devour whatever remaining storage space you have left on your console.

Unsurprisingly, it looks as if Treyarch's Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will continue this trend when it releases on November 13th. The latest entry in the series is no slouch on current-gen consoles, and will require 95GB on PlayStation 4 and 93GB on Xbox One to install. Not great, especially considering Modern Warfare only took up around 60GB or so on PlayStation 4, and that was only a year ago.

But next-gen paints an even grimmer picture, as Black Ops Cold War wants almost 40GB more on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Of course I understand that the next-gen version was always going to be a bit bigger because of all the shiny new features and graphical enhancements, but 40GB more? Blimey.

Given the recent leaks that suggest the PS5 and Xbox Series S have roughly 664GB and 364GB respectively, I can't imagine Call Of Duty fans are going to be too happy about giving up 133/136GB of that so quickly. Hell, that's almost half of the Xbox Series S' reported storage, and close to one-sixth of the PS5's. Who knows where that install size might stand after more updates?

The good news is that players will have options to try and make some space where they can. "Console players can choose to uninstall specific game mode packs, such as for Campaign or Zombies, in order to reduce the game's overall file size," Activision wrote. That's certainly something.

PC gamers have even more options when it comes to installing or leaving certain parts of Black Ops Cold War, although lord knows they need that choice. Running the latest Call Of Duty on the highest possible settings on PC with campaign, multiplayer, and everything else installed will require an eye-watering 250GB.

However, if you're happy to run the game on slightly lower - but still perfectly respectable - settings, that'll take up 175GB. The even better news is those who just want to play multiplayer can install a fairly modest 50GB and leave it there. These ballooning file sizes are still pretty far from an ideal situation for gamers on all platforms, but at least we're being given ways to do something about it this time around.
