Call Of Duty Fans Complain About Skill-Based Matchmaking In 'Black Ops Cold War'

Last weekend's Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Alpha sparked off an old debate about SBMM - skill-based matchmaking - in Call Of Duty games.

For those who aren't entirely aware of what it actually is or does, SBMM is a system that automatically assesses the skill level of each player, pairing them up with other players of a similar skill level. This is usually to ensure newcomers don't immediately run into veterans, get absolutely destroyed, and end up being completely put off jumping back into more games.

There are plenty of arguments for and against implementing SBMM in online games. Improving as a player and building your stats means you're constantly ending up in matches with higher-skilled players, which sounds great on paper. However, many gamers argue that this constant drive to play at your very best against players who are as good - if not better than you - defeats the nature of casual games.

As reported by CharlieIntel, fans were quick to criticise SBMM in Black Ops Cold War. Numerous high-profile players and content creators took issue with the way in which later matches would become needlessly complicated as the system started to kick in. Some stressed that they don't take issue with SBMM because they want to be able to absolutely stomp newcomers, but because they don't want to have to give 110% to every single match they play.

At the time of writing Treyarch has yet to comment on SBMM in Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. With the next round of tests scheduled for October, I imagine we'll see SBMM trending on Twitter again before long. Watch this space.
