'Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare' And 'Warzone' New Update Is Massive

We're gonna need a bigger console.

If you were planning on playing Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare or Warzone at any point in the near future, you might want to think about getting the latest update downloaded as soon as possible. The latest update for the popular FPS and its free-to-play battle royale spinoff is available today (April 28th) and clocks in at a whopping 15GB. That's a yikes from me.

This new (mandatory) patch is part of the game's ongoing Season 3 of content, although it doesn't sound as if there's anything in this latest patch that justifies such a hefty download. In an update on its blog, Infinity Ward outlined a few minor bug fixes, adjustments to the speed and size of the gas circle, and a few cosmetic items. Certainly, nothing that sounds like it should involve 15GB of space.

Perhaps Infinity Ward is sneaking a new mode or some new maps into the game? I'd like to believe that, but the truth is that most file sizes involved with Modern Warfare and Warzone have been absolutely monstrous with little to no reason. Back in February, Production Director Paul Haile took to Twitter to defend the file sizes and implied that the studio was working so that future updates wouldn't be so meaty. This doesn't seem to have come to pass just yet.

The good news is that there is some new content coming to the game wrapped up in all those gigabytes. In its blog post, Infinity Ward confirmed that an update to Gunsmith will allow players to create new hybrid weapons. In addition, we'll get to "experience close quarters action in the return of the 'Shoot the Ship' playlist" that throws Grind and Cranked into the mix.

Meanwhile, Warzone will be getting a new "Most Wanted" contract, giving players the option to make themselves a bounty to all enemy teams on the map. Survival will result in that player being able to revive and redeploy their entire squad, so it's high risk/high reward.

Oddly, Infinity Ward also explained that this week's update will consist of two separate downloads. Or at least, owners of the full version of Modern Warfare will have to indulge the developer in two separate downloads.

"Once the update is live, players will download the patch as normal," the studio wrote. "Once that is completed, when an owner of the full version of Modern Warfare tries to access Multiplayer, Special Ops, or Campaign they will be prompted to download the Data Pack DLC."

"During the Data Pack DLC download, you'll have access to Warzone so, jump into a match of Battle Royale or Plunder. When the download is complete, players must restart the game to access all modes of Modern Warfare. Free-to-play Warzone users will not have a secondary download to download the Data Pack DLC with this update."

It's not yet clear when exactly today the download will go live, but Modern Warfare and Warzone updates tend to release around the evening here in the UK. RIP my plans to play Warzone tonight, I guess.
