It's safe to say that 2019's Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot has been mostly well-received by fans. But while there are those who still have an issue with the game's multiplayer (as is the case with every Call Of Duty), there was near-unanimous praise among the community for Modern Warfare's shocking, brutal, and often controversial single-player campaign.
I'm sure there are plenty of fans out there that would love to see how Infinity Ward would follow up the story, myself included. Fortunately, the studio's narrative director Taylor Kurosaki recently hinted that there's "plenty of ground" to cover in a potential sequel. Before we go any further, I just want to warn you that I will be talking spoilers from the Modern Warfare campaign. You've been warned.
Season 3 of Modern Warfare multiplayer and the free to play Warzone battle royale saw the surprising return of a character that we all thought bit the dust during the game's campaign. Alex appeared to sacrifice himself to save the day during a touching scene in Modern Warfare... but now he's back in action as a playable Operator, complete with a prosthetic leg to boot bad guys in the arse.
Perhaps understandably, some fans appear to be a little worried that Alex's return as part of the game's multiplayer component is wasting any story potential for a "proper" sequel. The good news is that Kurosak took to Twitter to assure fans that there are still all kinds of storytelling avenues that Infinity Ward could go down for a sequel to Modern Warfare.
While this is not confirmation that Infinity Ward is working on a follow-up to Modern Warfare, it's nice to know that the team is at least thinking about where a sequel might go. With that said, I don't think any of us would be too shocked if Activision were to announce a second installment somewhere down the line?
After all, Modern Warfare was, and continues to be, a huge hit for both Infinity Ward and Activision. Within just a few months of release it had established itself as the most-played Call Of Duty game of the current console generation, while the battle royale mode continues to bring in players in droves.
If Modern Warfare is the start of a brand new story and Infinity Ward has ideas for where it wants to take that story next, it's inevitable that Activision would be on board. Clearly the Modern Warfare name is an excuse to print money, so expect at least a few more sequels before this rebooted story is over.
