'Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare' Studio Apologises For Size Of Season Two Update

It is a heckin' chonker, to be fair.

While Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare is undoubtedly a solid return to form for the franchise in almost every regard, it's not been without its issues. Ask anyone, and they'll likely agree that one of the most irritating aspects of 2019's shooter is the frequency and size of the updates.

On far too many occasions, I've gone to boot up Modern Warfare for a quick game, only to be forced to wait around for yet another update. This recurring issue hit tipping point with fans yesterday, with the arrival of the ridiculously massive Season Two update.

It was, to be fair, always expected that the Season Two update would be fairly substantial. After all, it includes a few new maps, some new maps, and even a brand new (old) operator in the form of Ghost. But few would have suspected that the file size for the update would be a whopping 51GB. To be clear, that's just on PS4, where the update was its smallest. It was 64GB on Xbox One, and an eye-watering 94GB on PC.

Needless to say, the Call Of Duty community was less than thrilled with this development, with plenty of complaints flying around on social media. This furore promoted developer Infinity Ward to outright apologise for the size of the massive Season Two update, and explain a little bit about why it's so gosh darn chonky.

Production Director Paul Haile took to Twitter to explain the situation, and promised that part of why the latest was so big is because it includes new asset packs that should reduce the overall size of the game and lead to (slightly) smaller updates in future. Take a look at what he had to say below.

Haile also added that a future update for the game will give players the option to delete or keep DLC packs to free up space as and when its needed. This is a system we've already seen implemented in Halo: The Master Chief Collection to much success. Unfortunately, it seems this new DLC management system for Modern Warfare will be a console-only deal. At least for right now.

In other Modern Warfare Season Two news, the latest in-game cinematic for the shooter seems to finally confirm the long-rumoured battle royale mode. Could sneaking this mode into the game have been part of the reason the update was so large? Perhaps not, but by all accounts it looks like battle royale is coming to Modern Warfare a lot sooner than we expected.
