'Call Of Duty: Warzone' Anniversary Celebration Teases Zombie-Filled Gulag

'Call Of Duty: Warzone' Anniversary Celebration Teases Zombie-Filled Gulag

Welcome to the ghoul-ag. I promise that's not my joke.

Call Of Duty: Warzone has finally celebrated its first Birthday! While it feels very much like Activision's battle royale has existed since the first recorded syllable of time, The game itself has actually only been around for a year. You know what they say: time doesn't fly when you're stuck inside sheltering from a deadly virus.

So far, Activision's official Warzone Birthday celebrations have been fairly low-key. A post over on the Call Of Duty Twitter account invited users to share their stats and brag about kills and such, but... that's kind of been it. Despite reports that Verdansk was set to wiped away today in a massive nuclear explosion while zombies poured out from every corner, it hasn't happened. Not yet, at least.

The good news for those of you who do want to see Warzone go down in a zombie apocalypse is that there's still hope. As spotted by GamesRadar, a number of prominent Call Of Duty streamers have just received some special Warzone Birthday swag. This package includes some truly ugly orange joggers with the word "captured" written down the leg, along with a note.

"There are no second chances after losing a battle here," the note reads. "The other prison is a hostile-rich environment. You're safer in the ghoul-ag."

It's unclear exactly what this "ghoul-ag" might be, but it certainly sounds to me like a spin on the standard gulag that fills the prison area with zombies. This lines up with some of the reports we've been hearing over the past week or so, many of which seem to agree that the zombies who first arrived in Verdansk as part of the shipwrecked tanker just off the coast near prison are slowly but surely going to spread out across the map.

Just last week, leaked audio files pointed to a Verdansk-ending war between players and zombies. These leaks seemingly hint at an upcoming mode called 'Plague', in which players must work together to take the map back from the undead that have completely overrun it.

One uncovered line from the announcer can be heard to encourage players by saying: "this is our last chance to save Verdansk". Other voice lines include "don't turn into a zombie! For Verdansk!", and "we can't lose Verdansk, fight those damn zombies!"

While it was widely believed that all of these zombie shenanigans would bring Verdansk and this current chapter of Warzone to a close in time for the first anniversary, it could be that Activision wants to surprise players by dropping the event later than expected. Keep a close eye on Warzone over the next few days, because something is coming.
