Call Of Duty Was The Best-Selling Franchise Of The Decade

In news that probably won't come as much of a shock to anyone, Call of Duty - a property that releases a new game every year - was the best-selling franchise of the decade. That's according to market research company The NPD Group, which recently shared its list of the ten best-selling games of the 2010s (in the US) across all platforms.

The full list, which you can see below, makes for fairly unsurprising reading. Grand Theft Auto V was obviously the best-selling game of the decade. Rockstar's open world crime epic has gone from strength to strength since releasing in 2013, and was also recently named best-selling game of the decade in the UK.

In November last year, it was revealed GTA V had shifted another five million copies in just six months, bringing the grand total of units sold to an incredible 115 million. It probably helps that the game has been released for PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, and PC at this point, and has a hugely popular online mode that Rockstar continues to update regularly.

But enough about GTA V. The list, for your perusal, is below...

  • Grand Theft Auto 5 (Take-Two Interactive)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision Blizzard)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (Activision Blizzard)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision Blizzard)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (Activision Blizzard)
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts (Activision Blizzard)
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 (Take-Two Interactive)
  • Call of Duty: WWII (Activision Blizzard)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (Activision Blizzard)
  • Minecraft (Microsoft)

I don't know man, is it a little worrying that the ten best-selling games of the decade came from just three companies? Rockstar and Take-Two got another look-in with 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2, while Microsoft predictably rounded out the list with Minecraft. However, it was Call Of Duty that ruled the roost, with seven of the ten games on the list. Of all the Call of Duty "sub" franchises, it was Black Ops that proved most popular. All four games in the Black Ops series are present and correct.

For comparison, the ten best-selling games of the decade in the UK are actually quite different. GTA V is still top dog, as I said, but there are considerably less CoD games on the list. The original Black Ops is still in second place and the best-selling CoD game on there, but the only other CoD games that made the UK list are Black Ops 2 and Modern Warfare 3.

The rest of the list is made up of FIFA (because obviously) and Minecraft, which came in just behind Black Ops at third place. See for yourself below.
